No six-letter words match. Try removing a letter from Not in the word or checking that each tile is correct.
How to use the 6 letter word finder
- Enter what you know. Put letters you have placed correctly in the big tiles, in order. Leave unknown spots empty.
- Add misplaced letters. If a letter is in the word but not in a particular spot, type it in the small box under that tile. The finder will keep it out of that spot and require it elsewhere.
- List loose letters. Letters that must appear anywhere in the word go in Also in the word.
- Rule letters out. Anything you know is missing goes in Not in the word.
- Sort and check. Results update as you type. Sort by points for Scrabble, or switch on uppercase to read them like a puzzle grid.
Your search is saved in the page address, so you can bookmark it or send it to a friend. The Count repeated letters separately option matters for words with doubles: with it on, a letter in a tile and the same letter in Also in the word means the word needs that letter twice.
Unscramble six letters into words
Switch to the Unscrambler tab when you hold a rack of tiles instead of a pattern. Type six letters to find anagrams, or type more to see every six-letter word hiding in a larger rack. A ? stands for a blank tile and can be any letter. For example, ABASER returns abaser, abears.

Strong starting words for 6 letter games
A good opener uses six different, common letters so every guess teaches you something. Ranking six-letter words with no repeats by how common their letters are in this list puts these on top:
If the first word leaves you short on clues, a second guess with six completely different letters covers twelve of the most common letters between the two.
Based on letter frequency across the full word list. Puzzle answer lists are usually smaller and more familiar, so treat these as a starting point.
Highest-scoring 6 letter words

Where six-letter words come in handy
Six letters is the sweet spot for several kinds of puzzle. In tile games a six-letter play is long enough to open up premium squares without needing a full rack. In crosswords it is one of the commonest entry lengths, so a few known crossing letters usually narrows the answer fast. Word searches, anagram challenges and six-letter variants of daily guessing games all lean on the same skill: matching a pattern against what you know.
The finder is built for those moments. Whether you are one letter short in a crossword or deciding which word to play, it cuts the dictionary down to a handful of candidates. The letter pages are useful when you would rather browse than search, and each one lists every matching word with its point value.
Frequently asked questions
How many 6 letter words are there?
Our word list contains 22,342 six-letter words. The exact number depends on the dictionary: a game's own word list can be smaller or larger, so use this count as a guide rather than a rule.
How do I find 6 letter words that start with a certain letter?
Type the letter into the first tile of the finder, or open a dedicated page such as 6 Letter Words That Start With S. You can also combine a start letter with an ending, for example S in the first tile and E in the last.
Can I unscramble six letters into words?
Yes. Switch to the Unscrambler tab, type your letters and the tool lists every six-letter word that can be built from them. Enter more than six letters to see words from a larger rack, and use ? for a blank tile.
What is the highest-scoring 6 letter word?
Using standard English tile values, the top score in our list is 36 points: quazzy. Board bonus squares are not included.
Are all of these words valid in Scrabble or other word games?
The list is a broad English word list, so most words will be accepted in Scrabble-style games, but no list matches every game exactly. Check the official dictionary of the game you play before relying on an unusual word.
What are good starting words for 6 letter word games?
A practical approach is to open with a word of six different letters made from the most common ones. By letter frequency in this list, ARIOSE is a strong opener, followed by GLUNCH, which uses six completely different letters.
Where does the word list come from?
It comes from an open-source English word list released under the MIT licence, filtered to alphabetic words of exactly six letters. The About page explains the method and its limits.
Does this site save my searches?
No. The finder runs entirely in your browser and your letters are never sent to a server. See the privacy policy for details.
